Music with  Mrs. Storm

We take P.R.I.D.E. in our musical adventure!

I have five basic expectations that everything else falls under in the music room.  These form an acronym:  P.R.I.D.E.

P osition yourself to learn.
R ight ways are used to get attention.
I will keep my hands, feet, objects and unkind words to
myself.
D irections are followed the first time they are given.
E very transition is quick and quiet.

Everything we do in music class will fall under these five expectations and the four schoolwide rules:  Be safe.  Be respectful.  Be responsible.  Be on task.

Together, these will keep our class running smoothly.  I will be utilizing the R.T.P. program to assist with running our class smoothly, as well.

Finally, regarding grades:  I will be using participation points as well as playing and written assessments to assess the students.  I will also have playing assessments and written assessments every once in a while to help me see if they have learned the concepts that I’m expecting them to learn.  I will keep a copy of each assessment and send an assessment home with students for you to keep track of their progress.  I also expect each student to be at the performances throughout the year.  One of the best ways to show you their progress, and to monitor their progress myself, is to see them perform what they’ve learned.  If there is any reason why they can not attend, please e-mail or call to talk to me at least a week before the day of the performance.  There will be a project to make up the points from the concert, as it is part of their grade.

This year will be a great year!  I’m so glad to work with your children and to be a part of the Woodland Park Academy family!  I look forward to meeting all of you!

Hello!  My name is Nicole Storm and I am the music teacher at Woodland Park Academy.  I am incredibly blessed to be working with your children and look forward to the rest of the year here.

What brought you to Woodland Park Academy?
I went to college at Alma College and recently graduated.  I student taught in St. Charles.  My first teaching job was in Pontiac teaching Kindergarten through 8th grade music.  I have played in concert and marching band my entire life, and couldn’t imagine a day without it.  That is how I chose my major.

What instrument did you play in school?
I played the flute through high school and college.  I also played the alto saxophone and clarinet.  The piano is another instrument I took lessons in.

Do you have a family?
Right now, I am on my own, but I am engaged to be married in a year and a half to another musician!  I have two dogs, Toby and Jackson.  Toby is a scaredy-dog and Jackson is a thrill-seeker.  I couldn’t have two more opposite dogs!

What is your favorite song right now?
My favorite song right now is a song by Rascal Flatts called “Take Me There”.  I love it; it’s just a beautiful song.

Who are your three favorite composers?
My favorite composers vary from day to day, but my top three right now are Beethoven (classic!), Stravinsky (he’s really great and more modern, but kinda kooky), and Copland (he created BEAUTIFUL music).  I really like to focus on classical music, because people forget its existence and its influence on music today.  If you look through most popular songs right now, there is some sort of classical theme thrown throughout.  If you ask, I’ll make a list for you!

What is your favorite TV show?
I have four – Heroes, Grey’s Anatomy (I am thoroughly addicted to this show), House (so funny), and 24 (I’m so sad that it doesn’t come on until the winter, but HOORAY for Jack Bauer).
