Dear Fifth Grade families,
Welcome to fifth grade at Woodland Park Academy! We are excited about starting a new year! This year will be an adventure in learning for your child and we feel privileged to be a part of his/her journey.
Fifth grade is a significant year for students. Not only will students be expected to take on more responsibility, they will often find that they need to work a bit harder to maintain their grades. Be assured that fifth grade is a fun and exciting year! We hope to work with you and your child to ensure your child’s success.
We would like to take some time to outline our schedule and the basic procedures in our classroom. If you should have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us through the office, 810-695-4710, or email us at jwatson@wp-academy.org and dmlinarich@wp-academy.org.

Paper Stackers
There is a paper stacker tray for each subject taught in our classroom. Your child will place completed work in the correct tray. Homework is also turned into the stackers. Having these trays help to alleviate any confusion as to where papers should be turned in.
Newsletter
Every Friday, we will post a newsletter on our website informing you of that week’s assignments, upcoming events and important information. Please read the newsletter for important notes, dates, deadlines, and test dates. If you do not have access to our online newsletter, please request a copy from your child’s teacher.
R.A.H.
RAH stands for “Reading At Home.” Students are expected to read 30 minutes each day, at least five days each week. The minutes should be spread out throughout the week and can be done silently or aloud. Your child’s total reading minutes for the month should be at least 600 minutes. Your child will be bringing home a calendar on the first school day of each month. This will be used to record how many minutes he/she reads each day. The calendar does count for part of your child’s reading grade. The students will record the title of the book and the amount of pages read on the back of the calendar. This teaches them responsibility. A student and parent/guardian signature is required on the bottom of the calendar. The calendar is due the first day of the new month that we are at school. Please encourage reading! You will be surprised at how your child’s reading will improve.
Daily folders
Each day, your child will bring home a daily folder. This folder will contain any graded work and notes from their mailbox. Please go over the papers with your child and have him/her correct and work on any problem areas. Students need to return the folder daily. I have provided a folder for your child to use for the Daily folder.
Student Planners
Each student will be given a student planner. Students are expected to write their assignments for the day in their planner. We believe this is an important tool for improving your child’s organizational skills. In addition, it keeps you informed as to what is happening in the classroom. All class work, as well as assigned homework, will be written in it. Each evening, please sign the planner so that we know you have looked at what is written there. Whenever needed, we will write notes to you in the assignment books, so keep an eye out for a message from us!
Conferences
Fall conferences will be held on November 4 and November 5. Spring conferences will be held on March 10 and March 11. There may be conferences held any time deemed necessary by the teacher, parent, or administrator.
Volunteers
We welcome volunteers into the classroom. We have a sign up sheet for volunteers ready. If you would like to volunteer, please sign up on the sheet. If you would like to volunteer but can only do it once or twice, please send a note or an email a few days in advance and we will try to make sure that we have prepared something for you to do. Also, if you are signed up and can not make it, please contact us in advance so that we can make other arrangements. If you work and can not come into the room, but would still like to help out, please let us know. If you have an area of expertise that you think may be useful or interesting to the class, let us know this as well.
Birthdays
In our classroom, we are going to celebrate birthdays a bit differently. Since we all love to be acknowledged on our birthday, we will sing “Happy Birthday” to your child at the end of the day on his/her birthday. A creative way to honor your child on his/her birthday is to donate a book to our classroom library instead of bringing in food. Of course, this is only if you would like to. If you chose to, your child will have an opportunity to share the book with his or her classmates during the last 5 minutes of the day and will have the honor of placing it on the shelf. In addition, your child’s name will be on the book so that those who read it can thank him/her for donating it.
Here are a few ideas of books and authors would be great for our library.
A Series of Unfortunate Events books
Boxcar Children books
Artemis Fowl books
Harry Potter books
Chronicles of Narnia books
Books by Beverly Cleary
Books by Patricia Polacco
Sports Illustrated for Kids magazines
Time for Kids magazines
Books by Kathy-jo Wargin (The Legend of … books)
Any other book or topic that your child is interested in.
Book Orders
We will be sending home book order papers each month. We are sending it home as an option. It is not mandatory to order, but a resource available if you would like to purchase a book for your child. Book orders are a great way for you to stock up on books at a very good price. Also, our classroom earns books for your participation in this program. Again, we want this to be a resource for you, not something that you feel obligated to do. If you decide that you would like to order,
•
Please include the completed order form and check made payable to Scholastic Book Clubs in an envelope with your child’s name and “Book Order” on the front.
Miscellaneous
We have always been open for suggestions or questions so feel free to contact us anytime before or after school. If your child wishes to bring a water bottle, that is fine but please no gum, candy, pop, or energy drinks. If they want a snack, they can bring a healthy snack. Please try to limit the amount of nut products your child brings due to students with severe allergies in our school. If you are feeling generous and would like to donate to the classroom, please contact us and we will let you know what we need.
We look forward to being your partner in the education of your child during the upcoming school year. It is of utmost importance to us that your child has a very positive experience in the fifth grade. Please know your visits and help are always welcome in our classrooms. We look forward to meeting all of you.
